James Karanja

I was born on the 22nd of Dec. 1969 in Nyandarua, Kenya. In 1976 my family migrated to Nakuru where I finished my primary and high school education. From 1992 to 1997, I worked with A.I.C Diguna Mission and then in August 1997, I joined Kenya Highlands Bible College. I married Ulrike Herrmann in 1998 and in the same year we moved to Germany where I joined European Nazarene College and graduated in 2001 with a BA in Religion and Theology.
In summer of 2002 I earned a presidential scholarship for academic excellence at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. I graduated from Asbury in 2004 with an MA in Theological Studies with a concentration in Historical Theology. From Winter Semester of 2004 I began writing my doctoral dissertation with the Faculty of Evangelical Theology and Sub-faculty of History of Religion at the Philipps University Marburg under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Christoph Elsas and Prof. Dr. Wilhelm Richebächer. The title of my doctoral dissertation was: “The Foundation of Africa Inland Church: The Story of Africa Inland Mission in Kikuyuland in Colonial Kenya between 1893 and 1963.” On 19 Dec. 2007, I did my oral exam with the Faculty of Evangelical Theology and received my doctoral title with a Magna Cum.
My area of interest include History of Faith Missions, Theology of Missions, Contextual Theology, History of Christianity in Africa, African Indeginous Religions, Philosophy of Religion, etc. I am currently residing in Germany with my wife Ulrike and our two children; Gracie and Phil.
