Reviews

One of the interesting areas of comparative literary studies is that of examining the relations and influences between different national literatures to determine whether the similarities found in the works of writers from different national, social and linguistic borders are cases of literary analogies or influences. This is what the author does in Culture, History, and Comparative Literature by examining the works of the American novelist John Steinbeck and the Cameroonian novelist, poet and playwright René Philombe. It is an important contribution not only to the discipline of Comparative Literature, but also to American, African, Cultural and Postcolonial studies. It should be on the shelf of any serious student of these academic disciplines.
Edward O.Ako

Culture, History, and Comparative Literature: John Steinbeck and René Philombe is a fascinating and timely study of the works of two important artist-writers—the Cameroonian Philombe and the more well-known Steinbeck. This comparative study carefully analyzes major works of both authors and then draws important conclusions about both cultures.
