The montane rainforests of Ethiopia are the original habitat of Coffea arabica and have high plant species diversity. They are, however, severely threatened by deforestation and forest degradation. This study presents vegetation surveys of the rainforest with wild Coffea arabica in the Bonga region, southwestern Ethiopia. The altitudinal gradient in this region causes a change in floristic composition from lower to upper montane forest. Furthermore, there is a strong impact of coffee management on the wild coffee populations and on the plant species diversity of the forest. Recommendations for a reserve network with core and buffer areas are given.
